Why your thyroid may need a couple Brazil nuts

Brazil nuts are a prime example of how food is medicine. A little goes a long way and too much can be dangerous.

Your thyroid gland is responsible for releasing hormones that help regulate metabolism. It releases T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) that reach and affect every cell in the body.

Signs that your thyroid may be UNDER-ACTIVE :

- Fatigue

- Cold hands and feet

- Dry hair

- Hair loss

- Frequent muscle aches

- Weight gain

- Difficulty losing weight

- Constipation

- Depression

An underactive thyroid/hypothyroidism means that your thyroid is either not producing enough T4 or T4 is not being properly converted to the active form of the hormone T3.

Common explanations are:

1. Hashimoto's thyroiditis

-This is an autoimmune disorder where your body produces antibodies that attack and destroy the gland itself which ultimately disables the secretion of these necessary hormones. This is usually the cause of the deficiency or absence of T4 hormones.

2. Radiation to the neck

-Radiation to the neck damages the cells in the thyroid

3. Thyroid surgery

-The removal of the thyroid

4. Too little iodine in the diet -Iodine is needed to produce thyroid hormones and without enough, our thyroid gland cannot produce these hormones. Our bodies cannot produce iodine on its own, and so we need to get iodine through our diet.

5. Too little selenium in the diet - Selenium is responsible for the conversion of T4 hormone into the active of form of T3. An insufficient amount of selenium in the body may result in not enough T3 needed for proper function.

Signs that your thyroid may be OVER-ACTIVE :

- Anxiety

- Irrtability

- Sweating more than usual

- Hair loss

- Heart palpitations

- Weight loss

- Nervousness

- Diarrhea

- Insomnia

- Fatigue

An overactive thyroid/hyperthyroidism means that your thyroid gland is producing too much T4 (Thyroxine).

Common explanations are:

1. Graves' disease - An autoimmune disorder where your body produces antibodies that specifically cause the thyroid to produce too much T4. Genetic predisposition is a likely cause.

2. Thyroditis - The inflammation of the thyroid gland. This causes the storage of T4 hormones to leak out and enter the bloodstream.

3. Too much iodine in your body

- Because iodine is needed to produce thyroid hormones, an excess consumption of this mineral may ultimately cause an increase and excess of these hormones.

Whether you relate to either HYPO-thyroidism (underactive) or HYPER-thyroidism (overactive), you can start supporting your thyroid TODAY! The answer? Brazil nuts! Brazil nuts are one of the, if not the best, source of SELENIUM. The mineral needed to support the conversion of T4 to the active form T3 and essentially creates BALANCE that supports both under-activity over-activity of thyroid hormones.

Dosage for thyroid support: 100-200mcg of Selenium

1 Brazil nut = ~90mcg of Selenium

*** The upper limit for Selenium is 400mcg so make sure to only eat one or two a day! ***

***In order for you to determine if your thyroid gland is actually underactive or overactive, a blood test, administered by your doctor is required. And because the symptoms for both underactive and overactive may overlap, it's important to first see your doctor before supplementing with iodine.
